During the Summer of 2026 I decided to explore the idea that researching ideas in a conversational way with an A.I. model could be a valid and more effective method than using old-school web search engines. I had already been comparing the Gemini “AI Mode” results tab to the regular search results with Google. The AI mode seemed to offer a much more comprehensive response that was also organized in a way that saved a lot of time trying to pore through the search engine results looking for valid help. But could I trust it? Maybe Gemini intentionally found biased sources to use or was naive enough to skew the answer with junk internet data. So I decided to “interview” Gemini and steer it into explaining how it works. The results surprised me, there is a lot going on under the hood here that attempts to keep the AI focused and centered. There are researchers with opposing views constantly studying what the model is doing and refining it to reflect old and newer understanding of topics and limiting the bias in the results. It also did a very good job of understanding the viewpoint of my prompts but also presented opposing views in a way that was thorough and also respectful of both sides. It also acknowledged when it made mistakes and gave me better answers when I challenged it. But of course it is not perfect, the user must keep up their vigilance and question and confirm whatever is says. It is definitely a good choice for people who struggle coming up with good terms to use with search engines.
The first letter posted here focuses heavily on the methodology that AI uses, but also shows the viewpoint of a very conservative Christian person asking the questions so it may be interesting to readers for multiple reasons. The rest of the letters focus very intently on specific hot-button topics that many people have passionate opinions about. They are worth reading for any person that wants to see the topics from a mature Christian perspective but also wants to understand how others may have understandable reasons for their views.
If anyone wants to start exploring AI based search engine use, be careful to understand one thing: Although the underlying Gemini AI model is the same for the Google search engine “AI Mode” tab and the separate Google Gemini website, the way your history is saved for later amending by you is different. You can see a list of threads in the AI Mode method that you can refer back to like a search history and maybe that is all you need. But if you use the website instead (gemini.google.com, which requires you to log in with a free Google account) you have a way to develop a better history that is not subject to the whims of your web browser search history settings (the chat lists for each method are NOT inter-changeable!).
